Aristotles Room

For the Broken White Exhibition in the Van Abbe Museum,  four Designers in key positions of manufacturing companies and alumni of the Design Academy Eindhoven,  were asked to study ancient Greek philosophers' text on colour theory in order to define their own contemporary interpretation of what colour is, and open a conversation on how it can be used in today’s interiors.

Christiane Müller about the Aristotles room project:

"By dosing the intensity of colour in this installation, by highlighting accents or celebrating colour, a varied tonal layering within the colour families arises, overriding the importance of - or the need for - a preferred colour. Indeed, what matters most is the interaction between the multiple hues and textures.

Although connecting colour to materials is what I do in my day-to-day work, this inspiring exercise based on the ancient Greek theory on colour - carried out toghether with my other colour colleagues - confirmed my conviction that colour never stands on its own. When using colour in public spaces it is essential to understand the setting in which it will appear, the dimensions and the possible combinations.

When materialising colours, it is a desingers responsibility to be aware of how they affect people. Plato teaches us that colour is not merely a defined pigment description, but rather a combination of elements, each with its own effect. This eliminates the question of right or wrong colours."
